  • Our report provides some context on the financial challenges faced by councils in Wales and summarises our key findings from this work

    Our report reflects on the financial challenges faced by councils in Wales and what all of this means for the future financial sustainability of councils. We also provide some reflections on how councils’ future financial sustainability could be strengthened.

    Our focus

    Over the spring and summer of 2024, we looked at the financial sustainability of each of the 22 councils in Wales. We focussed on:

    • the strategies to support councils’ long-term financial sustainability;
    • councils’ understanding of their financial position; and
    • councils' reporting arrangements to support regular oversight of their financial sustainability.
