Audit Wales is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Law & Ethics Specialist to support the Head of Law & Ethics in ensuring the proper legal and ethical functioning of Audit Wales. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the integrity and transparency of public audit in Wales.

About the Role

As a Law & Ethics Specialist, you will play a key role in maintaining and operating our information governance framework, ensuring compliance with data protection and freedom of information legislation, and supporting broader legal and ethical functions across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Information Governance
    • Implement information governance arrangements, such as providing privacy notices, privacy impact assessments, and compliant contract terms, including in respect of the use of artificial intelligence.
    • Operate systems for handling Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, data protection subject access requests (SARs), and breach reporting.
  • Training and Development
    • Deliver induction and ongoing training on information governance and the role of Audit Wales.
  • Policy and Legislative Development
    • Conduct horizon scanning of legal and policy developments and assist in drafting responses to consultations.
    • Support the Head of Law & Ethics in developing organisation-wide compliance arrangements.
  • Legal Advice
    • Respond to ad hoc legal queries.
    • Review draft audit reports in respect of legal issues.
  • Welsh Consolidated Fund (WCF) Control
    • Exercise the AGW’s Comptroller Function to ensure lawful withdrawals from the WCF.
  • Anti-Money Laundering
    • Receive and report money laundering concerns and support police liaison.
    • Prepare annual reports for the Executive Leadership Team and Audit Risk Assurance Committee.

  • Strong understanding of data protection, FOI, and public sector governance, including in respect of developments and use of artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Excellent analytical and drafting skills.
  • Ability to address complex legal and ethical queries with sound judgement.
