John Herniman

John Herniman was born in Cardiff.

Since 1987 when he joined District Audit as an Audit Trainee, John has seen a number of changes to public services and regulation in the UK, working initially at the District Audit, then the Audit Commission, the Audit Commission in Wales and now the Wales Audit Office. After  qualifying as an Accounting Technician (AAT) he  became a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) in 1993.

Throughout his career he has undertaken a variety of roles and has relished  the challenges of managing a varied portfolio of NHS and Local Government clients throughout the Country. In particular he has enjoyed supporting NHS and Local Government bodies to secure significant improvements in their financial management, corporate governance and performance management arrangements. He was particularly pleased to be able to secure over £20m of additional funds for one Local Authority. He was also responsible for delivering a range of corporate projects including leading a major change programme to modernise audit processes which delivered a more streamlined and efficient audit service.

John became an Engagement Partner at the Wales Audit Office shortly after its formation in 2005 and is currently a Group Director within financial audit leading on Local Government and Criminal Justice. Continuing his keen interest in Performance and Financial Audit he now oversees a varied portfolio of work across the full range of NHS, local government and central government bodies. He has a keen interest in assuring high quality work that adds value and supports improvement, and is involved in undertaking quality control reviews across Wales.  Outside of the Wales Audit Office, John enjoys music, travel, and all types of motorsport
