Huw is a Performance Audit Director with responsibility for Local Government Performance Audit, and is the Engagement Director for four Unitary Authorities.
Huw was educated at Cowbridge Comprehensive School before going on to study at Leeds Polytechnic Carnegie School of Physical Education, gaining a BA (Hons) in Sport & Recreation Studies. After graduating in 1986 Huw began a career in public sector sport and leisure management at Cardiff City Council, rising to Senior Recreation Services Manager overseeing the contracting of the City’s leisure facilities.
In 2000 Huw joined the Audit Commission as one of its first ‘best value’ inspectors. Initially leading on the Audit Commission in Wales’ work on leisure and cultural services, Huw soon gained expertise in governance inspections. In 2004 Huw spent 14 months on secondment to Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council leading a strategic improvement review of Community Leisure Services. On returning to the now Wales Audit Office Huw became a key contact at a number of Unitary Authorities, and undertook several governance reviews.
From 2008 Huw managed the Wales Audit Office’s programme of work under the Wales Programme for Improvement, leading on the design and development of the local government performance audit programme, before being promoted to Director in 2016.
Huw lives in Cardiff with his wife and youngest daughter. His other daughter is not too far away, following in her father’s footsteps studying Sport and PE at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Huw enjoys keeping fit and is sports mad with a particular passion for rugby, occasionally dusting off his boots for the (very) odd veterans match.
